Overview

To support several projects for a client in the pharmaceutical sector in the region of Brussels we are searching for an experienced EARLY DESIGN ENGINEER biotech (freelance or employee).

Our OTS (Outsourced Technical Services) department supports projects in different sectors on basis of project staffing with consultants working at the client’s site.


Responsibilities

The Early Design Engineer leads feasibility studies for capital investment projects across biological, pharmaceutical, utilities, and infrastructure domains. The role includes:

  • Preparing and presenting strategic scenarios.
  • Delivering feasibility and early design packages (requirements, budget, schedule, risks).
  • Supporting business investment partners in project ranking and portfolio planning.
  • Ensuring alignment with environmental goals (carbon neutrality, water reduction).
  • Managing a portfolio of +/- 20 studies with a total CAPEX €100M.
  • Operating across sites including Bulle (CH) and Braine-l’Alleud (BE).

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect and challenge customer needs
  • Develop and present innovative project scenarios
  • Support project initiation and transition to delivery
  • Align with client's strategy and site master plans
  • Coordinate engineering office activities (RFPs, contracts, follow-up)

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years in biotech technical projects (Drug Substance / Drug Product and finished goods) – senior profile required.
  • Experience as Engineering Lead or Subject Matter Expert (SME), at least 5 capital projects delivered, with budgets up to €10M.
  • Experience in capital and asset management.
  • Pharma experience is mandatory.
  • Extensive experience in Drug Substance (large equipment).
  • Languages: English and French are both required.
  • Agility: Ability to work across multiple aspects of feasibility studies.
  • Biotech expertise (Drug Substance and/or Drug Product).
  • Strong skills in scenario development and assessment.
  • Knowledge of cGMP, HSE, utilities, and infrastructure.
  • Solid financial acumen (CAPEX/OPEX).
  • Competence in people and risk management.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • You are quickly available for this temporary project and possess a valid work permit to be able to work in Belgium.
