About Us

The Research & Development department is indispensable in the realization of Damen’s ambition to become the most sustainable and digitally connected shipyard in the world.

We give support to the business in the development of an innovative product portfolio and offer pro-active advice with the aim to further improve the quality and performance of the Damen products and services.

The R&D department is divided in three functions, i.e. Research, Development and Enabling Technologies. The Development teams support the business with technical consultancy and expert advice and acts as technological conscience in commercial projects. Therefore, they build on the technical knowledge developed by the six Research teams that focus on strategically relevant technology domains.

Damen invests substantially in its own internal R&D programmes to develop the required knowledge and technology. Moreover, to enhance our knowledge, skills and capabilities beyond the state-of-the-art, we are very active in collaborative R&D projects with other industry stakeholders as well as academia and knowledge institutes, both nationally and internationally.

The Damen Research & Development Department is looking for a Development Engineer with background in Naval Architecture, Electrics and Automation or Mechanical Systems integration.

The Role

As a Development Engineer you will focus on the support of the business with expert advice and advanced simulations. Together with a diverse and multi-disciplinary team of four to eight development engineers, and in consultation with the other R&D Research Engineers, you provide expert technical advice and will be responsible for the initiation and realization of relevant research and development projects for the abovementioned knowledge domains. You will support the implementation of new technologies in existing and conceptual designs of ships and ensure proper application of fundamental principles of relevant technologies. You will work closely with relevant departments within the Damen group, such as Design & Proposal, Engineering, Services, Production and Damen Clients.

Furthermore you will also be responsible for pushing forward further developments both inside and outside the company and ensuring this developed knowledge is shared within and throughout the Damen Group.

Key Accountabilities

The Development Engineer plays a key role in implementing the knowledge that has been developed at the R&D department into the products and concept developments of the Business Units (technology push) and to promote knowledge development relevant to the business units (technology pull). Therefore you as a Development Engineer are responsible for:

  • Maintaining a network of internal stakeholders and suppliers ;
  • Providing expert technical advice to the business units regarding the product range and it’s functionality, performance and quality on a consultancy basis ;
  • Identifying knowledge gaps and initiating or supporting in R&D projects to address these.

Skills & Experience

  • Master degree in applied technology such as Naval Architecture, Mechanical engineering, Electrical engineering or equivalent with a focus on conceptual design & engineering of ships
  • Bachelor in applied technology and 5+ years relevant working experience with a focus on conceptual design & engineering of ships
  • Planning and result focused
  • Good communication skills and customer-oriented
  • Good command of English is required, both verbal and writing skills.
