Damen Shipyards (Gorinchem)
We are Damen
Damen is a family owned business that stands for fellowship, craftsmanship, entrepreneurship and stewardship. We believe that our oceans, seas, lakes and rivers offer humanity a growing range of possibilities in terms of trade, food, energy and recreation. We provide maritime solutions to meet these opportunities, through design, shipbuilding, ship repair and related services.
In the previous century, we revolutionised shipbuilding with standardisation and serial production. More than ninety years and 6,000 ships later, those pillars are unchanged. Their importance is only growing with the need for increased sustainability and digitalisation. It is our aim to combine our proven standardisation with the innovations of digitalisation to become the world’s most sustainable shipbuilder.
We offer you an Ocean of Possibilities. Join our family.
About us
The Research, Development & Innovation department of Damen helps the company to become the most sustainable and digitally connected shipyard in the world. We give support to the business in the development of an innovative product portfolio and offer pro-active advice with the aim of further improving the quality and performance of the Damen products and services.
The RD&I department is divided into Research, Development, and Enabling Technologies branches. There are six research teams.
Damen invests substantially in its own internal R&D projects. Moreover, we are also very active in collaborative R&D projects with industry partners, as well as academia and knowledge institutes, both nationally and internationally.
The Role
The objective of the proposed graduation assignment, is to have real-time measurements as a possible solution to increase accuracy of annual CO2 emission calculations, as well as providing insight into annual emissions of other harmful substances. Think of NOx, PM and UHC's for example. Why is this so important to Damen? The Carbon Intensity Indictor emissions regulations came into effect in 2024. These regulations require ships of 5000 GT and above to calculate their annual operational CII based on annual fuel consumption. Based on the CII rating, a corrective plan to reduce CO2 emissions may not to be developed by shipowners. While the goal and incentive of CII and other emission regulations (EU MRV, FuelEU Maritime, etc.) for ships is clear, none of the regulations cover actual emissions of ships.
