Introduction to the job 

We are looking for a safety and risk engineer who assesses product designs on safety aspects and facilitates safety risks assessments and/ or HAZOP, LOPA, ALARP and SIL studies. These assessments are carried out jointly with competence engineers who are organized throughout the entire D&E organization. You execute the interest & progress of safety reviews & safety risk assessments. A deeply rooted principal knowledge of safety & ability to uphold standards on challenging situations is needed to be successful in this role.  

You will be part of a risk assessment team with an overall vision that  R&D clusters conduct their own traceable and auditable risk assessments by 2030.  

You will work in the Human Safety in Design (HSID) team. This team (appr. 15Fte) is part of the Safety & Compliance (S&C) department within the Development & Engineering (D&E) sector and is in Veldhoven.  

Roles and responsibilities 

The mission of this department is to Provide a safe work environment for our people and secure product safety compliance. The vision of the S&C department is to secure a coherent independent safety culture for ASML Research & Development by 2030. The HSID group contributes both to this mission and vision through their work and expertise in: 

  • Safety in procedures 
  • Environmental, Health and Safety (protecting people and environment from harm) 
  • Safety incident investigation 
  • Safety Risk Assessment (design) 
  • Safety culture 

As risk-engineer technical safety, You will: 

  • Build risk assessment competence (through classroom and on the job training) in the R&D clusters. 
  • Ensure the proper selection of risk assessment methods to align with the analysis goal and appropriate quality of the assessment concerning both human and technical safety aspects. 
  • Assess with the project team if the designs are compliant with the ASML safety standards. 
  • Check if prescribed the tooling will be used in a proper manner (e.g. hoisting with standard tooling within the weight load limit (WLL) with sufficient safety margin)  
  • Assess completeness of the addressed safety hazards. 
  • Assess Risk ranking with the project team 
  • Assess system level risk and perform SIL determination. 
  • Facilitate & chair risk assessment meeting 
  • Facilitate safety risk assessment with ASML software 
  • Ensuring the quality of the safety risk assessments by ensuring the presence of the relevant competences (e.g. Human factors, Lifting, Gas safety, High pressure, Laser safety) 
  • Ensuring the deliverables are completed by the projects 
  • Reporting via the available software tooling the identified & mitigated risks 
  • Involve and align with safety competences. 
  • Share knowledge incl. best practices with direct colleagues and engineers across ASML 

Education and experience 
  • Bachelor/Master in Safety Engineering 
  • Experience in machine safety and functional safety design. Having a functional safety/machine safety certificate is a plus. 
  • Typically, 2-5 years’ experience in product development/ engineering organizations 
  • 2- 5 years- experience in HAZOP/LOPA/ALARP participation, able to do HAZOP/LOPA/ALARP/SIL facilitation is a plus

  • Discrete, independent self-propelling and showing initiative; 
  • Can communicate clearly, concisely and directly to peers and customers; 
  • Through a knowledge base of (technical) safety (theories) can factually support his/her case 
  • Can clearly state own opinion in difficult and conflict situations and works towards aligning effort with others 

Other information

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
