The role

Are you passionate about hydrodynamics and ready to apply your expertise to innovative naval projects? Damen Naval is seeking a Technical Specialist Hydrodynamics to join our Naval and Technology department. In this role, you will take charge of the development, advice, and engineering of hydrodynamic systems for complex naval shipbuilding projects, contributing your deep knowledge and innovative solutions. As part of a dedicated hydrodynamics team, you will work on all phases of the project, from proposals and concept designs to model testing and sea acceptance trials, ensuring optimum performance in resistance, propulsion, seakeeping, and manoeuvrability. As Technical Specialist Hydrodynamics, your primary focus will be on the hydrodynamic aspects of naval vessel design and performance. You will:

  • Work with design teams to optimize hydrodynamic performance during proposal and engineering phases.
  • Conduct hydrodynamic simulations, model tests, and sea trials to ensure designs meet performance standards.
  • Collaborate with clients, suppliers, and research institutes to incorporate hydrodynamic insights into the design process.
  • Collect and analyse operational data to validate and refine hydrodynamic performance and enhance future projects.
  • Develop innovative methods and tools in collaboration with academic and research partners.
  • Provide technical expertise on resistance, propulsion, manoeuvrability, seakeeping, and smoke simulations using a variety of specialized software packages.

Key accountabilities

  • Contribute to research and development projects, creating and reviewing solutions for complex engineering challenges.
  • Support verification and validation tests during production and research phases, ensuring designs meet all technical requirements.
  • Actively promote advancements in hydrodynamics to improve future applications.
  • Deliver high-quality engineering or research work within agreed schedules and budgets.
  • Participate in design reviews, ensuring compliance with all applicable requirements and regulations.

Skills & experience
To excel as Technical Specialist Hydrodynamics you should possess the following qualifications and qualities:

  • Master degree in Naval Architecture or a related field, with at least five years of practical experience in hydrodynamics, focusing on proposal and engineering phases.
  • Thorough understanding of fluid dynamics, particularly in complex naval projects.
  • Experience working in complex project environments and with academic research, including the creation of new methods and tools.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to interact with research institutes, universities, engineers, and project managers in the naval shipbuilding industry.
  • Competencies: customer orientation, results and quality orientation, teamwork, creativity, initiative, and critical thinking.
  • Fluency in both Dutch and English (written and verbal) Good command of the Dutch and English language both written and verbal.
  • Excellent references antecedents as a pre-assignment security screening is part of the recruitment procedure.
  • Permanent EU citizenship and passport are both required. Candidates with EU (work) visa or with (also) a non-EU nationality and/or passport are not eligible given the requirements imposed by the military nature of our projects.
