Job

Introduction to the job

Founded in 1984, ASML is the world's leading provider of lithography systems for the semiconductor industry, manufacturing complex machines that are critical to the production of integrated circuits (‘chips’). The IT division supports key business processes with infrastructure, hardware, software, and services.

The User Experience (UX) competence is a virtual team of about one hundred people from across the company, who design services and applications that enable ASML’s customers, suppliers, and employees, to work more efficiently and effectively, with a higher level of satisfaction. We also improve digital adoption and process adherence. The customer experience (CX) part of the competence works on ASML’s commercial software, whereas the employee experience (EX) part of the competence works on all employee-facing software solutions: hundreds of predominantly web-based applications used by sectors such as R&D, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, HR, Finance, and IT itself. Competence members spend on average 10% of their time on improving the competence itself, by participating in competence events and so-called feature teams that develop our methods and guidelines.

This vacancy is for a position in the ASML IT UX Specialist Team, which can be seen as the ‘engine’ of the UX competence. It consists of several people who support the competence for 10%-100% of their time, e.g., around design systems, UX analytics & feedback, and competence management.

Job Mission

You will lead, build, and support the EX-part of the ASML-wide UX competence. As such, you have great responsibility, and great freedom in how you will approach and prioritize a wide range of activities to develop the UX-related skills, methods, standards, and guidelines. You will facilitate learning and knowledge sharing and build a highly engaged community of diverse professionals. Those people report solid-line to numerous different Group Leads and dotted-line to you for competence-related contributions (~10% of their time).

Furthermore, you will pro-actively and reactively help, directly and indirectly (i.e., via the competence members) all EX-related agile/product teams to improve their UX maturity, e.g., by explaining the value of user-centered design and by helping the Group Leads to hire skilled UX specialists for their teams.

Finally, you will engage with the IT management team and Office of the CIO to ensure ‘visibility’ of the competence and to make user-centered design an undisputed part of the agile development process.

Job activities

Lead the competence and its members:

  • Support help requests from competence members, e.g., show them where to find the guidelines and methods, bring them in contact with other members with certain knowledge and skills.
  • Onboard new members to the competence, i.e., explain purpose, structure, guidelines, tools.
  • Maintain our membership administration so we know exactly who does what, who knows what, and who needs to be invited to the events.
  • Organize inspiring competence events (for 50+ people), some focusing on the progress in the feature teams, others focusing more on social bonding.
  • Coach 8-10 feature teams on a regular basis to make sure they are happy and deliver methods and guidelines. Examples of topics are: UX research methods, design system for AR/VR, conversational design, accessibility, data visualization, UX maturity assessment tool.
  • Coach the UX Competence Coordinators for standards (to ensure consistency and findability), learning (to realize ample learning opportunities for the members), and communication (to ensure the members and stakeholders stay up to date of our whereabouts).
  • Collaborate with the EX Design System Lead to improve the design system(s!).
  • Collaborate with the UX Software Lead to ensure our UX software meets the needs of our members.
  • Define the competence roadmap, i.e., which features we should work on now and in the future to improve the maturity of the competence itself and to be ready for the challenges and opportunities that ASML will face.

Support product teams and their leaders:

  • Explain to the leaders of our agile/product teams why they should be connected to the competence, i.e., which value a shared member can deliver during their sprints.
  • Help agile/product teams to identify the right UX capabilities for their teams (‘intakes’) and sometimes create ‘proposals’ for how they should approach the user-centered design process.
  • Support the Group Leads of the agile/product teams throughout the hiring process, mainly by selecting CVs and interviewing job applicants.
  • At times, agile/product teams may want to ‘T-shape’ a non-UX specialist. In that case you will determine if the person is sufficiently motivated and meets the other criteria to join the competence.
  • At times, you will need to help allocating or re-allocating UX specialists to agile/product teams, e.g., when one team is looking for a specialist and another team no longer has budget.
  • Collaborate with the UX Analytics & Feedback Lead to increase the number of agile/product teams that implement a semi-automated feedback loop and help them to actually use this feedback.

Represent the competence to management and other stakeholders:

  • Involve senior stakeholders by demonstrating the value of user-centered design.
  • Create reports and newsletters to make the value of the competence even more visible.
  • Participate in the community of practice of Competence Leads (there are ~12 competences in ASML IT).
  • Report on competence maturity indicators to the IT competence management.
  • Collaborate with the Office of the CIO to embed user-centered design in the agile ‘flow to ready’.
  • Collaborate with the Competence Leads of the CX-part of the UX competence.
  • Always be on the lookout for opportunities to strengthen the position of our competence, in an otherwise very technical company.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in an area such as Industrial Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Science, Psychology, or Engineering.
  • 10 years of professional (= post-degree) UX research and design experience in a large organization.
  • Excellent overview of the UX profession and in-depth understanding of its value and challenges.
  • Ability to plan work and deliver on agreed goals independently.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with other disciplines.
  • Ability to execute and drive results pro-actively.
  • Ability to deal with resistance and convince others of the value of UX.
  • Ability to balance short- and long-term goals, to compromise and to adapt way of working.
  • Ability to work under time pressure and rapidly changing conditions.
  • Fluent in English, verbal and written. Profound knowledge of Dutch is a plus.
  • Work on-site in Veldhoven, The Netherlands for at least three days per week.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading a (small) UX team.
  • Experience (co-)leading a UX competence/practice/guild/tribe/squad/special-interest-group.
  • Experience with the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).
