The role

As the Senior Automation Engineer (Interim) at Damen Naval, you will temporarily strengthen our Automation team to ensure that state-of-the-art naval vessels are built and commissioned with fully operational and compliant automated systems. In this interim role, you contribute to the development of automation concepts for complex onboard processes, covering a wide range of integrated systems across the vessel.

Depending on the vessel configuration, your automation design may include strategic defensive and deterring systems. Your solutions enable the crew to safely control and monitor all onboard functions through advanced automation technology. You will work within the 3DExperience engineering environment following the V-model, ensuring that basic and detailed designs are thoroughly reviewed, tested, and verified during both the design and build phases. The culmination of your work is the successful commissioning of a naval vessel ready for service.

Key accountabilities

As Interim Senior Automation Engineer your key responsibilities will include:

• Developing functional descriptions and other basic engineering documents and drawings related to the ship’s automated systems.

• Preparing and maintaining specification documents for all automation components and installation processes.

• Writing detailed test and validation plans to ensure compliance with Class regulations and customer requirements during both virtual (simulation) and physical testing (FAT, HAT, SAT).

• Managing vendors and subcontractors to ensure timely and accurate technical input for the project.

• Reviewing and integrating vendor and subcontractor designs into the vessel’s overall automation architecture.

• Developing and maintaining standards and working methods for detailed engineering and commissioning activities.

• Providing technical input during proposal phases by creating conceptual automation designs.

• Offering engineering and commissioning support during ongoing or new projects.

Skills & experience

To excel as Interim Senior Automation Engineer, you should have:

• At least 5 years of experience designing and installing complex automation systems (PLC/SCADA), preferably within maritime, offshore, or aeronautical industries.

• Proven experience working in complex, multidisciplinary projects involving multiple suppliers and subcontractors.

• Experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) using the V-model approach.

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Technical Automation, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Excellent references, as a security screening is part of the hiring process.

• Permanent EU citizenship and passport, as required by the military nature of our projects. Candidates holding dual EU/non-EU nationality or an EU work visa cannot be considered.
