Master’s Thesis Internship: Coverage Argumentation and Safety Validation for Automated Vehicles

At Siemens, we develop cutting-edge tools and methodologies to support the testing and validation of automated vehicles (AVs) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Ensuring AV safety is a complex challenge due to the vast range of possible driving conditions, including rare and unpredictable scenarios. Traditional real-world testing alone is insufficient, making scenario-based testing and virtual validation critical approaches for safety assessment.

This master’s thesis project will focus on coverage argumentation for our approach to finding unknown-unsafe scenarios. In scenario-based testing, coverage measures how well test scenarios reflect real-world driving conditions that an AV may encounter. The thesis will explore methodologies to quantify and improve coverage within our virtual validation and optimization framework.

Your Role and Research Scope:

Your thesis will focus on the following key questions:

Completeness of Measured Data:

  • How well does our collected data define the scenario space?
  • Do we have sufficient parameter coverage (e.g., velocities of different actors) to accurately model real-world distributions?
  • Apply statistical techniques from literature to analyze parameter distributions.
Probabilities of Optimized Scenarios:
  • Given the parameter distributions in the collected data, after how many kilometers or hours of driving is an AV likely to encounter a given scenario?
  • Develop probability estimates for generated scenarios using statistical and machine learning approaches.
Coverage Argumentation for Optimization-Based Approaches:
  • How many kilometers of real-world driving can be represented through virtual scenario-based testing?
  • Evaluate the efficacy of our approach in covering critical real-world scenarios through simulation.
Eligibility: Applicants must be currently enrolled students or recent graduates. Candidate from outside the European Union must already hold the necessary visa and/or work permit, as Siemens does not sponsor or assist with visa or permit processes.
